denial isn't just a river

Yesterday we received what we think is a Vireo. Tiny thing, only 13 grams. She had a broken wing, was bleeding from a wound at the site of the break and was in extreme shock. While we were cleaning the wound and figuring the dosage rate for the antibiotic, the lady explained that her four dogs had found the bird in the yard and decided to play tug ( Read more... )

I get so upset with people who insist it is cruel to keep their cats indoors when they so long to get outside. Yes, to get outside and kill things!

I do, too, especially when they bring us victim after victim (one lady brought us six in one week!) and then get angry because we can't always save them.

Btw, you know birds...is it a Vireo? I'm thinking maybe a Warbling Vireo, but we're not really sure. Its coloring doesn't really fit any of the pictures.

Gosh, it almost looks like a Philadelphia vireo.

I think you're right! Spouse says the lores are dark (he can see that closely - lol!) And the book says this is part of their summer range. Cool! I'll go change the paperwork to reflect the new ID. Thank you! :)

My cats are kept firmly indoors, though they enjoy window hunting. They spend so much time there that the birds and squirrels don't even mind them.
That little bird is adorable. Glad she's coming along.

Our first cat used to window hunt, too. The hummingbirds would hover just inches away. She loved watching them.

I hope the little bird heals properly. It's so hard to wrap a tiny little wing like that. She doesn't seem to mind its bulkiness, though. She's such a cheerful little thing.

I am always conflicted, though not deluded as to what my predator friends are capable of. I don't attach any moral judgment to their hunting instinct, but at the same time, I make a lot of noise letting them out, so everyone has time to clear the yard. Hopefully. And by everyone, I include the hapless AT&T guys who found himself treed up the phone pole when I let the mutts out...

I hope your little birdie recovers quickly and fully. It's adorable. Except for whatever gruesome thing it's eating, lol. :)

The gruesome stuff is minced broccoli florets. Or maybe you meant the mealworms? lol. I think I've been hanging with birds too long, because I swear sometimes that combination looks pretty good to me.
