It's been raining for three days now. The worst of Irene was kind enough to pass us by, though we now have enough kindling to fill every empty box we had in the garage, but now Tropical Storm Lee is dumping an abundance of rain on us, too. We keep trying to convince it that Texas could use it more, but storms never seem to listen to me ( Read more... )

Along with most of the East Coast, we've been spending the last couple of days preparing for the onslaught of Hurricane Irene. It looks like we'll be spared the worst of it where we are, but we may experience high wind and power outages.

Yesterday we received what we think is a Vireo. Tiny thing, only 13 grams. She had a broken wing, was bleeding from a wound at the site of the break and was in extreme shock. While we were cleaning the wound and figuring the dosage rate for the antibiotic, the lady explained that her four dogs had found the bird in the yard and decided to play tug ( Read more... )

Today is one of those grace days, calm and serene. From my computer, I can see squirrels, birds at the bird bath (watching crows trying to hunch their big feathered butts down into a small bowl for a splash is hysterical. In animal rehab, as in many areas of life (such as writing - of course I would go there!) we hit plateaus. After making steady progress, things just seem to stall. Often they come in clumps, which makes it harder. A bird with an injured leg heals to the point of standing up, but can't navigate a perch. About two weeks ago, we received four tiny Canada goslings from our local vet. We were told they were found running frantically through the streets of downtown Baltimore, no mother in sight.

Now that my husband and I have more or less retired from working with the wildlife, the tension here has eased considerably. We're slowing regaining our interest in other things, like gardening and exercising. Especially the exercising! It's really amazing how out of shape we'd gotten. More snow fell last night, about four inches. Spouse has been out this morning shoveling paths to the birdbath, feeders and the pen where a little gray-phase screech owl is at present.
