pocket full of sunshine

1) The mast crop for black walnuts, acorns and hickory nuts is awesome here! That's a double-edged sword, because local lore insists that a heavy mast crop means a harsh winter ahead. So every day now, I go out and stuff the pockets of my old brown sweater with acorns to take along and toss to the squirrels who hang around our city library whenever ( Read more... )

We've had a weird pecan crop this year. Usually all three trees do about the same, just as well or just as poorly depending on the summer we've had. But this year only one tree has produced anything at all.

But that one tree has got the biggest, most bountiful crop of pecans we've had in quite a while. We picked up several baskets full last week and there are just as many again on the ground, not to mention the dozens of clusters of nuts still waiting to fall. The branches are so heavy I can reach right up and pick pecans off the tree. We've had a half-dozen large branches break right off the tree due to the added weight.

I don't know what to make of it. :) It does feel like we're going to have a bitter cold winter though. Our autumn usually lingers 'til Thanksgiving, but this year it was very brief.

Oh, I would so love to have a pecan tree! They're my favorite nut. We hope to plant a few soon, as well as some English walnuts. I'm glad you're getting a good crop there, too :)

It does seem wonderful and yet a bit ominous the way the trees are outdoing themselves this year.

You're very welcome :) I so loved that game, and the fact that my middle name is Anne gave it an extra oomph back then. It certainly felt like the acorns had an extra message yesterday. lol. I'm going back out today for one more gather before the rain sets in tomorrow.

Very cool! In a way, I kind of envy falconers, because they're allowed to develop a bond and a long-term relationship with their bird(s) that we as rehabbers are not (unless the rehabber has a permit to have an ed bird.) There have been a number of birds come through here that I felt great affection for and who seemed to really like me, too, if only :) Most of the falconers I've met are good people.
