"You're disgusting," Inuyasha commented.
Startled out of his reverie, Miroku glanced over at his friend. "What?"
Inuyasha gave a nod to the left, toward where Sango sat with Kohaku, whispering closely to her brother. "That. You're jealous."
"I am not," he protested.
"I know that look."
"Then it isn't what you think." He was striving for patience but, as usual, Inuyasha was not making it easy.
"Really."
Miroku knew Inuyasha expected some sort of answer, but he did not know how to explain it in a way that Inuyasha would understand. He had merely hoped that the rescue of her brother would not cause Sango to forget his existence. That she was now completely focused on Kohaku stung. A lot more than he would have liked to admit.
"She needs to spend time with Kohaku right now," he said finally. "She only has him for a lifetime. She has me forever." He hoped. He cast a surreptitious glance at his right hand; they may have saved Kohaku's life, but Miroku still carried a curse that could not be broken until Naraku was destroyed.
It could still kill him. It was ingenious. And cruel. Daeva were immortal, but there were limits to Aion's gifts. If there was no body left to revive, there could be no resurrection, there could be no quiet and peaceful return to the Aether... simply the end of his existence. And yet... without a second thought, he had chosen to save Kohaku rather than seize his own best chance at breaking the curse.
And he'd done it just to see Sango smile.
He had thought he was smarter than that, or at least more selfish.
He clenched his hand into a fist, feeling the dig of beads against his flesh, and released it with a sigh. I've truly become a fool...
