Atlanta was very hot. There were a lot of hotels, restaurants, and not much else. (My mother was rather shocked by the Hooters waitresses standing outside in their uniforms - I don't think she's ever seen orange booty shorts before). Some decent sushi and pretty nice people, though we didn't really get a chance to explore very far

It sounds like you did really well to me, and since you said you were pitted against higher ranking fencers, its really impressive!
I would like to say more, but I don't know what a 'pool' is when it comes to fencing, or much of those things. :( I'm glad things seem to have gone well ('cept for the idiot referee) and that the people were nice.
Sounds rather astounding to me actually.

A pool is like the preliminaries for the tournament, deciding who you fence one-on-one in the DE rounds. I wrote up an more detailed explanation here a while back, if you’d like to look.
