I really like this idea of going with animal totems (as my sister is particularly keen on foxes, and it always looking out for items with that animal on them) it's a great crossover idea, and you can always add new animals each year, sort of limited edition to begin with (too see how popular they might be) and people like the idea of something that there are only a few of. Get prepay on all orders, so you can buy materials. I also don't see why you can't mock up in sterling, but tell customers that they can upgrade if they want.
Also, you might look into having designs lazer-cut into acrylics through an online service, that way you could sell a inexpensive line.
I also approve of the kickstarter as opposed to 'starving kitties' because you want to sell on the quality of your work, not because you need money.
