Ask the Upa - Religion

Ernir asked me the following:

Your mother is Catholic and your father is a Mormon, right? And you grew up in a country where the norm seems to be atheism or some form of religious apathy. Tell us how you came to accept your current religion.

(If I managed to tragically misunderstand your situation somehow, can you please talk about your experience of ( Read more... )

Thanks for making this post, I found it very interesting and educational and all. I think faith is such an interesting thing, I wish I could understand it like religious people do.

"So it seems that my faith is evident enough so that my friends know that I'm not just doing what my Daddy is expecting of me."

I never thought that. I think you're very nice about your religion - you're not as shy to talk about it as you were when I first got to know you (a good thing, in my opinion) but you're not obnoxious about it either, like some people.

If you offended anyone with that, it's only people looking for fights or people who are overly sensetive and should get their brains checked. Really, I don't see how people can get offended just because someone believes in something different than they do.

I think the reason why I didn't talk that much about my religion when we first met is because I talked so much about it in earlier years that I thought people were already tired of it. Of course, those were completely different people, so I was just being silly.

I quite enjoy discussing religion. And I love learning about religion, even my own. You'd think that after being in the same church for 20 years, I'd know all about it, but there as still tiny things in the scriptures that are new to me and it's always exciting.

I agree with Alda. If anyone took offense to this post they need a CAT scan. 0.o

This was very informative, though. Thanks for writing it. I liked the way you described your faith - that feeling in your heart where you just know. It's a good way of saying it so that even agnostics like me can understand. ^^

Thanks.

Well, that's how faith works. I'm not saying that there isn't also logical evidence that convinces me that my church is true, but if logic is all it took, converting people would be easier. If you don't have that spark in your heart, everything else is pretty much in vain.

Exactly. In my opinion logic doesn't really enter into faith, because faith isn't something that you can logic into being. It's either there or it isn't.

I liked this post very much. I haven't discussed religion and faith with you in a while now, but I always enjoy it. While on the surface we could be seen as though we are on different sides, or even enemies, (hah!) when it comes down to the heart of the matter we agree, I think. They way you find an answer when you pray, and the way I found your answer to Andrew (or Nina's) question instinctively is two sides of the same thing, I think. I just knew. I've known it for as long as I've really known you, and who knows long that is ( ... )
