Well, at last a Friday links post actually posted on a Friday. I ended up working from home today because Webster had a doctor's appointment but didn't feel well enough to drive himself. I'm glad I stayed home and drove him; we ended up having a pretty nice time and he was feeling better by the end of the day. Yay! He has to go back in two ( Read more... )

That Washington Post essay about cops is brilliant - thanks so much for posting it.

I wasn't so impressed by the chart showing how many Brits didn't vote for the Tories, because look how many voted for UKIP! Add that 12.6% to the 36.9% who voted Conservative, and ... that's a lot of people voting against a humane democracy. (And the nonvoters, what? Too alienated to care? That's not very good news for democracy either.)

Doesn't it just hurt that Oliver Sacks is dying?

Oh, I'm so distressed about Oliver Sacks. I've loved so many of his books.

UKIP. Jesus God, even the name is awful. Like Tea Party. What is wrong with our world?

Comparatively 12.6% isn't so much for a right wing, EU protest party in the current political climate all over Europe though. So I don't think the UK is particularly extreme or anything. Like in several state elections in Germany a newly formed anti-EU protest party came in around 10% (of course right now it is disintegrating in internal squabbles as new parties do, but pretty much just being "eurosceptic" got it into parliaments) and that is in addition to those who voted for the outright neo-nazi party also competing. And how many votes the Front National in France has been getting recently is even more depressing. Or look at Hungary, which with Fidesz has been basically ruled by nationalist extremists for the last couple of years. Then they even did the classic thing of changing their constitution to suit themselves better and give the ruling parties more power and ignored all the international and EU protests that the constitutional changes were to curtail press freedom, weaken human rights and rule of law and stuff. I mean, of ( ... )

I think a lot of people are just fed up with the whole centrist "there is no alternative to the status quo" rhetoric

I certainly am! But where is the left? Why is centrist perceived as left-leaning these days? Here in the States, people call Obama a socialist and I'm all WHAT?

I guess one just has to hope that it won't end up like in the 1930s.

Oh god, you and me both.

I was not surprised by Elementary. I guess I was waiting for it. I felt that at some point it was inevitable. It's really the only way for the show to delve deeper into their psyches.

I guess I wasn't paying attention because I was shocked -- also weirded out by Joan's apparent non-recognition of what had happened. But yes, you're right; it's a good way to move everyone to the next step.

PS: I'm so glad Alfredo is okay!
