i usually cut my basketball talk. i'm not going to, tonight, and you can scroll past or unfriend me if it bothers you. tomorrow i'll be back to cutting things. tonight, no

god, ash, i CRIED when danny green took that last shitty shot for carolina. i mean, i BURST INTO TEARS AND SOBBED. freshman mistake, freshman team, god. you guys ... this duke team is better than this game showed, you know? i can say that and mean it, they really are, but god, this carolina team is better than this season has showed, and that game in cameron, down the road, that's going to be a HELL of a game. well played, my friend. well played.
i figured. of everybody out there, i know you most of all get it.
I understand the crying on that shot because, wow, it was not a good shot. Both Duke & Carolina are better than they showed last night. I know you make freshman mistakes but yall had some huge ones. And wow, we like JJ watching more than we like playing sometimes. But it all combined to a hell of a game.
god, yes. just, yes. replace carolina with syracuse, replace april sky blue with tropicana-orange-juice orange and kick-you-in-the-shins-bruise blue, and you have the team that is my heart, my soul, my one true love.
i watched the 2003 championship game on a battery-operated, hand-held television around which twelve of us clustered in my best friend's garage because a massive ice storm had knocked out all the power in our county three nights before. i was wearing a t-shirt, in the middle of a syracuse winter, because it was my goddamn lucky t-shirt and not a goddamn thing could keep me from wearing it during the most important game in syracuse's history. it's been washed so many times the orange is probably closer to pink, and the blue lettering on the back that reads "real women wear orange" is legible only if you've got the words memorized to chant like i do, and the "Syracuse" emblazoned on the front is more white and cracked than it is blue and solid. i will never, ever throw away that t-shirt

why do all my stories about recent championship games start, "I WAS SO DRUNK I COULDN'T STAND UP, AND ..."
but seriously. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE 2003 TITLE GAME. and my abnormal love for jimmy b and the 'cuse.
a.) the default ex-boyfriend of my soul is a syracuse native, and a lifelong fan of the orangemen. we were not actually speaking at that time in our lives, but i watched with a great emotional fondness for him.
b.) THE ROY. that was the year that i watched the game knowing that THE ROY was going to leave kansas and come home whether he won or lost, and also the game after which THE ROY said "shit" on live national television, forever sealing my eternal devotion to his empire.
c.) jimmy b MARRIED A SYRACUSE CHEERLEADER, which i think is possibly one of the greatest things ever in the history of the universe.
d.) i am genetically frightened of the carrier dome.
e.) man, i wanted that title for boeheim so badly; it was him and roy, two of the active greats, who'd never won titles, up against each other, and it just.

oh god oh god i've only got three minutes and i'll still be late to class so i can't reply to this comment with all the blazing fire of adoration etc. etc. but mcnamara is fine, he bruised his thigh but yesterday was running sprints at practice and boeheim plans on putting him in for at least a few minutes tonight against UCONN because god knows we'll need him.
and i will so be here in march for the pool. (and the carrier dome is a scary, scary place, and yet is my second home. oh, the dome.)
GOOD TO KNOW RE: MCNAMARA. i like him, and he went down hard; the clips on sportscenter were scary. so hooray for his recovery! and good luck against calhoun, et al. as much as i love jimmy b, i hate jim calhoun. stick it to him, yo.
