An unfamiliar figure enters Milliways.  He's whistling a tune a hundred years ahead of the time he's ostensibly supposed to be from and has the tense, aggressively casual stroll of someone who's just ducked out of their kid's ballet recital to have a smoke ( Read more... )

"Not last time I checked, no," says the dark-haired pudgy fellow settled in at one of the nearby tables. He's got a stack of old, smelly, leatherbound books in front of him and a glass of something dark green, faintly opalescent, and possibly sluggishly moving of its own accord. "More of a bar with hotel and recreational facilities. Welcome to Milliways, sir."

"Milliways..." he intones slowly. "I take it that's a long way from Burbank."

"End of the universe, so yes, literally," Ray says. "Both in space and in time. Although if you happen to turn around and open the door you came in through, it'll still lead you back to exactly where you were when you went looking for the commissary. Useful little trick. My name's Ray Stantz. I've been coming here a few years now."

"My name's Jim. Most folks call me the Waco Kid."

He turns his eyes over at the window. "So that's what the end of the universe looks like, huh? I always thought it would be more of a slow fade to black. Maybe a fade to white if the director's a smartass.

"You know what? I think I'll stick around for a while. I'm off-screen right now anyway. Mind if I sit down?"

"Is this your first visit?"

The one asking the question is clearly friendly and concerned, albeit in a gentle, non-intrusive sort of way.

He is also not human. The ears give it away of course, but is more the eyes really. They way they're bright and intense and ancient. Of course, you have to ignore the robe, the long hair and the gently shimmering silver band resting on his brow to really focus on them.

He might sound vaguely British, only not really. He's seated at a table with a tall goblet of wine, a small plate with something baked, and an ancient-looking leather tome.

Jim briefly considers making a "hippie Spock" crack, but wisely decides against it.

"Yeah," he says. "Wasn't really looking for the place."

"I doubt anyone are, the first time. Looking for this place, I mean. It is hard to imagine a place like this if you haven't already been here."

He smiles. "My name is Elrond Halfelven."

"Jim, though I'm better known to the world as the Waco Kid. So where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?"

He hasn't ever seen anyone with ears like that. Except for maybe that one time he wandered into the wrong part of Detroit. Don't think that guy was born lookin' like that, though.

"Depends on how you look at it, really." The smart alec remark comes from the booth closest to the door. The remarker looks up at him with a smirk. "There's food and drink here, after all."

Jim smiles. "Yes, but this place draws a much more interesting clientele. Beats the usual assortment of B-listers and fat tourists anyway."

He tips his hat. "My name's Jim. You can call me the Waco Kid, if you like. What's yours?"

Belle nods her head in reply to his tipped hat. "I'm Belle. Would be silly for me t' call you Kid. How about I call you up a drink instead? That's more my style, anyway."

She indicated the seat across from her. "At the very least, let me explain what's going on. It'll help you adjust a bit better."

"Would it? Shit, I'm not that old, am I?" He shakes his bottle of scotch a little bit. "I'm already pretty well-covered in the drinks department, but I'd be happy to talk."

"No, but I bet the food's better," says a uniformed youth a good six feet tall who looks like a plastic mannequin come to life.

"The commissary's not so bad. It has to be, given the kind of prima donnas who tend to eat there."

He looks the young man over for a moment. Some of the others he'd talked to were plenty unusual, but they at least looked like tangible extant things. This...person?...was the single strangest entity that had ever talked to him.

"Can't say that anyone like you ever comes there, though. My name's Jim. What's yours?"

"Yup." He takes a BIG swig of whiskey. Jim's a good deal more enlightened than the citizens of Rock Ridge on the skin color department but there's something...otherworldly about this guy.

"So, um...where are you from?"

Well, even a few steps in the door can be dangerous.

A kid in an orange running suite ran in through the door.

"Oh CRAP!"

"Gah!" Somehow, Jim isn't completely bowled over by the contact. He does drop his whiskey bottle, though. He'd be a lot angrier if he hadn't already finished it.

He turns back to face the kid.

"You know, you should really watch where you're going."

"I was!" said Naruto, "But you know how the door works."

He looked the guy over.

"Not really. I just got here not long ago."

He looks over the kid's orange jumpsuit.

"You escape from prison or something?"
