[slightly off milliways: Guppy has suspicions, Enzo and Alex finally have introductions, and a Marvelous Escape happens.]Thankfully, after hotfooting it out of the infirmary, Alex did not encounter any more difficulties. Crawley didn't even ask why their youngest MI6 agent was nibbling a giant cookie. (He has to remember to properly thank Steph for ( Read more... )

"It's you," says the tall blond man leaning on the bar again.

This time, he's no watching football, just drinking wine and reading a book.

"Guppy Sandhu wants to see you in the infirmary. He's worried. Seems you fled."

"It was a joke," he says, grumpily.

(They did have ridiculous fake moustaches, after all; if Steph gets caught, it'd probably be for the best if he spreads the idea that it was just a teenage prank.)

"You could have left a humorous note," the man says.

"One of the mustaches fell off," Alex points out.

It was very Cinderella.

"I wouldn't worry, nobody found you." Guppy says, sidling up next to him.

"Why did you run away? You could have left any time, you know, I just wanted to help you."

Obviously, Alex thinks unkindly, or else he would have known about the milk cartons a lot sooner. He stiffens unconsciously at Guppy's approach. He feels sort of bad about all this and how upside down it is that he's treating a doctor who just wants to help him like an enemy so that he can follow orders from the people who want to use him.

"It doesn't really look like me."

"I know, art isn't really my forte." Guppy says. "My son could probably have done a better job."

Small smile. "He's an Alex too, but we call him Fry."

Well. He has to ask now. "Why?"

"Didn't what?"

No, Mia's not responsible for the milk carton. But Alex is kind of talking to himself and sometimes it helps to have a reply.

"Still okay, I imagine, Alex?"

Speaking of which, Alex ever-so-subtly twists the carton around so she can't see the 'missing' drawing.

"I'm fine."

It doesn't help him out much, as Mia's not really seen a milk carton before and now she's curious. What a novelty, cardboard boxes with little tops and they're full of milk.

"Boys your age always are if my memories from that time in my own life are right," she says. "Well, most of them, anyway."

As she recalls, her husband was something of a whiner at Alex's age. Still is sometimes, really.

"I am glad you're all right, though."

(Bugger.)

At any rate, he smiles at her cheerfully enough. "You?"

River blinks at him.

And at the apple.

It takes a few seconds, but she does seem to spot the milk carton finally, and her face sobers into something less baffled and more shadowed.

Alex glares at the carton as if the sheer force of his disapproval will cause it to spontaneously either (a) burst into flames or, (b) disappear from existence.

Neither happens, so he settles for tossing it in the nearest bin. At which point, it occurs to him that someone is watching him.

River... continues to watch him!

Soberly.

A close look will show that her focus isn't quite normal, though; not only does she hold eye contact too long, but she seems to be watching the air around Alex as much as his face, with her gaze sliding sideways to focus on nothing.

Since she's started it, Alex matches her gaze with one of his own, albeit much better focused. Without much else to do, he falls back on the training Ian gave him. He may not be Sherlock Holmes, but when your holidays include games like "guess your fellow holiday-goers' place of origin", well. He's not really sure about her age, but he'd guess on the young side - twenty? nineteen? He'd like to edge towards the younger end of the spectrum, especially since her drink of choice is apparently so... colourful ( ... )
