Today William found the Bar in the barn when he was getting ready to do some target practice. This is easier, his mother won't wince when she hears the shots and he remembers there's a target range somewhere out back ( Read more... )

Floyd is out taking a stroll, and absolutely not drawn by the sound of the gunshots, nope.

Just taking a stroll, that happens to being him near an honest to God cowboy, looks like, shooting cans. What Lawton thinks of his shot, he doesn't say. He just stands there, hands buried into the pockets of the jecket he's inexplicably wearing over his costume.

William's reloading when he hears Floyd and turns and nods,

"You want the range, sir?"

"Nah," Lawton says, proving his indifference by bringing out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. "I don't shoot for practice, anymore."

"What do you shoot for, sir?"

The jacket makes Lawton's costume look strange and William has no idea what to think of it all.

William is a better shot than Dan remembers him being, but he's unsure if it's his memory that is failing him -- or if the boy has simply gotten better at using the revolver since he's been gone.

Rifle in one hand, extra scarf in the other, Dan sneaks up on approaches William.

"I think your mother would have my hide if I let you get sick on my watch."

He's been practicing when he can to try and get better.

His last shot goes off the mark as he hears his father's walk and lowers his gun as he turns, trying to sound like this is normal, "I'm bundled up."

It's not normal, which is why Dan has been keeping mostly to himself these last few months. It's not normal at all and it bugs the hell out of him.

Wordlessly, Dan holds out the scarf.

After a pause:

"Yeah, y'are, but your ears are goin' numb."

Quickly he holsters the empty revolver and puts the scarf around his neck, not quite looking at his father,

"Ain't that bad."

He's not quite sure what he's referring to, being in Milliways and all that means or just the cold.

"You're quailing it." There is a woman in boots, trousers and jacket, and two guns on her belt, watching from a distance.

William turns at the voice and lowers his gun with a glare,

"The hell does that mean?"

"People are taught to hold a gun like a quail." She continues, after a small shrug. "Hard enough to not let it escape, but light enough to not crush it."

"That's a load of bull, of course. When you pull the trigger, your other fingers twitch, because that's how a hand works. The twitch pulls your aim off the target."

He's not sure what he's meant to do with that so moves to reload,

"That right?"

At the shooting, a swan flies up from the lake.

He notices the white out of the corner of his eye and lowers his gun to watch the beautiful bird fly.

The bird flies a wide circle, then lands not far away from where it flew up, giving the boy a nasty little avian stare.

William unloads and holsters his revolver before walking towards the lake.

Though that gets him more into the wind and its cold, he doesn't want to scare the bird, he's just curious.
