Today William found the Bar in the barn when he was getting ready to do some target practice. This is easier, his mother won't wince when she hears the shots and he remembers there's a target range somewhere out back ( Read more... )

"You're quailing it." There is a woman in boots, trousers and jacket, and two guns on her belt, watching from a distance.

William turns at the voice and lowers his gun with a glare,

"The hell does that mean?"

"People are taught to hold a gun like a quail." She continues, after a small shrug. "Hard enough to not let it escape, but light enough to not crush it."

"That's a load of bull, of course. When you pull the trigger, your other fingers twitch, because that's how a hand works. The twitch pulls your aim off the target."

He's not sure what he's meant to do with that so moves to reload,

"That right?"

She nods. "It's how I learned: hold the gun tight, hand high on the grip so you pull the trigger straight back, not up or down."

"Thank you, ma'am,"

William's been shooting for at least three years now. He didn't think his shooting was bad enough for a stranger to comment on it.

Well, he is missing half his shots. That is bad aim on the commando's book. "And feel free to tell me to sod off." Tanya smirks.

"Depends if you're going to do anything other than tell me how to shoot, ma'am. Think I know how to do that,"

He's practicing to get better.

The woman shakes head, then. "I was not telling you how to shoot, you know that already." She leans to a tree, and watches.

"Thank you, ma'am,"

If he'd known he was going to be watched this much, maybe he would have stayed home. William remembers the man in the shiny suit's advice and relaxes before managing to knock down four of the six cans.

If she'd known he would take offense to advice, she would have kept her mouth shut.

It's just... well, a feeling that she could tip the scales by giving a hint on how to hit more often. For now, she watches and ponders.

He didn't hear her giving advice, he heard her explaining how to shoot, which he knows how to do.

William's stops to reload once more.

"I wanted to help. You can shoot, but you could hit more often." A pause. "It would be a shame if you ended dead for missing one shot too many."

Tanya is not the most social of people, but she's trying to sound helpful, not condescending.

"I know that, ma'am. That's why I'm out here. How would you get me to hit more?"

He's not going anywhere until he finishes this round and he's willing to listen.

"Showing the tricks I learned over twelve years of war." Tanya moves over. "A different grip style, a trigger pull technique."

Her uncanny natural talent would not have sufficed on its own.

"Who've you been fightin'?"

She doesn't look like any soldier he's ever met.
