William looks up from his book when Bill enters and asks quickly,

"Are you the law where you're from, sir?"

Looking up from the tiny screen he's focused on, Bill turns his head towards the sound of the boy's voice.

"Yeah. I'm sheriff in Wheelsy, South Carolina. 2008."

He offers a friendly, open expression, looking him over, wondering if he's asking out of curiosity or there's something he needs help with.

"Oh, just never seen a sheriff with a uniform before, sir,"

Mainly just curiosity from William.

"Oh, yeah. There are some plain clothes cops, but generally a sheriff wears his. Badge is probably a little different, too."

Bill turns so he can show the boy the badge pinned to his breast. Instead of a tin star it's a shield.

Beckett's in the corner, practicing a magic trick.

Or attempting to.

After the case wrapped, she realized she'd been thinking about her grandfather more and more - and after a few desperate phone calls made to her dad, she'd been able to get a hand on some of his things.

Not the least of which includes a coin - a coin she's trying to make disappear and reappear in her hand.

(It'd looked so easy when Castle had done it.)

Bill closes the phone, wondering how much trouble tossing it into the lake will get him into.

Glancing up, he sees Beckett. He's about to speak up, when he notices her weird movements.

He watches her a minute, confused, then laughs and finally calls out.

"What're you doin'?"

The coin goes flying. Beckett clears her throat.

"Nothing."

Bill watches the coin skitter away, then looks at Beckett, an eyebrow arched.

"Nothin'?"

Late-afternoon sunlight is filtering through the windows by the time Kate unbuckles her tool-belt. After treating herself to a much-deserved shower in the guest bathroom, she heads into town to run a couple of errands.

When she walks into Milliways, a brown paper bag in one hand and Bill's truck keys in the other, she's more than a little surprised to spot the sheriff himself.

She approaches his table, a teasing smile curving her lips.

"Hey, stranger."

The phone is beeping along to the buttons he's pushing, and he pauses a moment to crack his thumb.

This is gonna take forever.

Hearing her voice, he looks up, and her smile prompts one from him.

"Hey."

She carefully places the paper bag on an empty chair; her eyes flick to the phone in his hand.

"New toy?"

"Kimbrell," he answers, handing the phone over to her.

His smile thins out and he lifts his glass to take a drink.

"Said communication is important with everything goin' on."

"What is so perplexing to put that look on your handsome face"

Coming from another man that might be a pick up. Coming From Jameson it's just ego.

Bill looks up and can't help a short laugh. Shaking his head, he lifts the cell phone slightly to indicate it.

"Technology is a pain in the ass."

"What Brand is it?"

"I dunno, I just got it."

He shrugs and holds it out to Jameson. It's a basic flip phone, and Bill could actually probably figure it out, he's just not happy about it is all.

"Tryin' t'put my phone numbers in there, which doesn't make any sense if I already know them by heart, right?"

There is a Daniel sitting at a table. Looking up from his copy of Fellowship of the Ring, he spotted Bill.

"Hey," he said not remembering the other's name.

Bill's brows furrow as he tries to place the guy.

"Yeah, I guess. Sorry."
