Beckett's in the corner, practicing a magic trick.

Or attempting to.

After the case wrapped, she realized she'd been thinking about her grandfather more and more - and after a few desperate phone calls made to her dad, she'd been able to get a hand on some of his things.

Not the least of which includes a coin - a coin she's trying to make disappear and reappear in her hand.

(It'd looked so easy when Castle had done it.)

Bill closes the phone, wondering how much trouble tossing it into the lake will get him into.

Glancing up, he sees Beckett. He's about to speak up, when he notices her weird movements.

He watches her a minute, confused, then laughs and finally calls out.

"What're you doin'?"

The coin goes flying. Beckett clears her throat.

"Nothing."

Bill watches the coin skitter away, then looks at Beckett, an eyebrow arched.

"Nothin'?"

"Nothing."

She doesn't look any more certain about it, though.

He quirks a smile, but leaves it at that for now.

"How you doin'?"

"Uh - good."

She shifts, subtly, to hide the bouquet of fake flowers on the chair beside her.

"Working hard, or hardly working?"

He laughs, his smile tired around the edges.

"Workin' hard for once. You?"

"Between cases," she says, taking note of the tired look.

"But I have the feeling a new one will present itself as soon as I head back."

"That's the way it works," he nods.

Looking at the distance between them, he gestures to an empty chair at his table.

"Wanna have a seat? Or I could... " he makes as if to get up, leaving it to her to decide who's going to move.

"As you were, Sheriff," she says, picking up her drink - it's coffee, since she's convinced it's going to be another late night - and heading over to him.

It also allows her the opportunity to discreetly pick up her trick coin.

Chuckling, he moves his glass to make room, even though there's already plenty.

As she walks over he looks over to where she was sitting, canting his head to see what she was up to.

She picks up his phone, wagging it in front of him.

"Better not leave this lying around," she says, praying the trick works even as she starts it, but when she curls her wrist and opens her hand, it's empty.

"You could lose it."

Proceed with gloating.

"Oh, yeah I'd-- "

He starts speaking, then trails off as he watches her hands. When she pulls off the trick he blinks and then laughs.

"Hey, that's pretty good."

"Thanks."

She sets his phone down after a beat or two, so he doesn't get too worried about missing it.

"Nice, by the way. Is it new?"

He's not that happy to see the phone's return.

"Yeah. Present from the folks above me, so they can ride my ass wherever I go."
