Urquhart came wandering into the kitchen after a bit.

He'd finished watching a comparatively boring football match, and now felt like food. Squid and garlic spinach, perhaps? He'd had that in Greece.

Urquhart knows enough about people to pick that out.

"But why wouldn't you?" he asks.

[sunbaked_baker]

She blinks and looks away, going back to getting the rosemary rolls ready for baking.

"What do you mean?"

[scots_wolf]

"You say it in such a wistful tone of voice," Urquhart says.

[sunbaked_baker]

"I just... doubt I'll be able to take you up on the offer, when it's there to be made."

She doesn't expect to be around to accept it.

[scots_wolf]

"Yes that's what I thought," Urquhart says. "What is going to keep you from it?"

[sunbaked_baker]

She stops, still looking down at the rosemary rolls. Just breathing, for a moment. Hearing herself breathe. Hearing the quiet rush of air from the oven vents.

"I might not be here."

[scots_wolf]

"Do you think your door might go away?" Urquhart says. "Or are you planning on not coming back?"

Gifts to everybody? he thinks, looking at the baskets.

It's quiet. "I don't know if I'll get the chance."

[scots_wolf]

"What do you think will happen?" Urquhart says.

She sounds as if she were planning to go into battle.

But she's a baker!

[sunbaked_baker]

"...I'm going to die."

[scots_wolf]

"Why?" Urquhart asks.

[sunbaked_baker]

"A single human doesn't survive going up against hundreds of vampires."

[scots_wolf]

"Why do you have to do that?" Urquhart asks.

[sunbaked_baker]

"Because they are out to kill me, under orders from their master, and I would rather meet them on my terms and possibly kill their master than have one of them find me while I am sleeping."

[scots_wolf]

"And there's nothing to protect you?" Urquhart asks.
