He's not very good with solving numerical problems that have far too many parentheses, decimals and fractions and often come up to answers and further numbers that don't even exist.
No, math is not something Ned would partake in for pleasure, not unless it has to do with measuring ingredients for a pie. (And, admittedly, he's become good enough with the basic measurements that it's more about emotional instinct than it is about getting the number of cups or teaspoons right.)
All that aside, Ned only vaguely recognizes the boy from his last Pi Day. Really, it's more about watching the kid deal with a huge textbook. It's pretty impressive.
Barty's flipping pages so quickly (at least, for someone who is supposedly working math problems) that it probably looks like he's just looking at the diagrams...at least, it would if it weren't for the fact that he keeps checking the back of the book.
At any rate, the pleased look on his face suggests that he's doing something right. (Also, the occasional giggling.)
If Ned can get his attention, though, Barty will almost certainly recognize him. He's got a good memory for faces.
