"You should see about getting him a collar or something," says Alyx, giving the dog an affectionate scritch. "In case someone else decides he's a stray."
"He was fighting off the people who had killed his last person when I found him," Ellen says. "There were four or five of them. It was in this huge old scrapyard I wandered into by mistake. Why?"
"Where?" says Ellen. "The scrapyard was miles from anything, except for Canterbury Commons, and nobody in Canterbury Commons even recognized him. She had a note on her from her brother, but the way he wrote it, I think he was dying."
"But you don't know, that's my point. That's why you should get some kind of ID for him, in case he wanders off and someone else decides he must not have an owner anymore."
"Where would I even get something like that?" Ellen says. "Uncle Roe in Canterbury Commons never mentioned anything like that, and he deals with the traveling traders all the time."
Ellen thinks about this for a bit. Eventually she says, "I think I have some scrap metal I can write on. As far as the leather-" She wrinkles her nose. "There were leather cuffs and collars on the Enclave uniform I found on the alien ship. I'll cut one of them off and work with that, I think."
"It wasn't my idea," Ellen says. "One of their smaller craft had crashed- I think it was somewhere north of Minefield- and when I got in close to investigate there was this huge light all of a sudden. The next thing I knew, I woke up in a cell on their ship with a pain in my throat and nothing but my underwear."
Easier than mentioning the first time she woke up.
