Then again, how do you forget your reason for breathing?
Her own breathing hitched, eyes fixing on the man she ran away from. The man she didn't intend to see again until she had a handle on her own feelings. Escape was impossible and try as she might she couldn't tear her eyes away.

He still thought of her every day. He sees her all the time, in his mind.
But he hasn't seen her yet, he's too busy tickling the little girl in his arms, making faces at her, grinning at her girlish squeals.
And then he makes the mistake (is it every a mistake when it comes to her?) of glancing up and catching her across the room. Just a glimpse and his heart seizes in his chest.

Apparently being a cold, heartless soldier didn't do much good when it came to the only man who'd ever made her do other than her will.
Her feet moved of their own accord, leading her to the other side of the bar from him. Her fingers clenched against the dark wood and she finally wrenches her gaze to his chin, somewhere safer.
"Is she yours?" Perhaps he had moved on. Maybe she was speaking the words of a ghost.

He facepalmed.
"Would you like a drink?" he asked avoiding that stream of conversation.
