HEY. This place. Just like he wanted, and a note: maybe it's just a case of right place right time, or maybe Bar's sick of takin' his gil. Whatever it is, shit yeah, he'll tend bar for a couple hours instead of drinkin' his life away. There's plenty of time for that after.Since he was 18 he's worked for Shin-Ra and pourin' drinks behind a bar wasn' ( Read more... )

"And what would be in an 'Icicle Run', then?" asks a young man who has only once seen someone behind the bar before.

He is dressed rather immaculately and speaks with a proper English accent, only slightly mixed with an Irish flavour.

If it is, it isn't something Tom is accustomed to.

Then again, he doesn't usually frequent bars like these; he prefers places where booze comes with other entertainment venues (read: girls).

"Sounds about right," he says. He takes another sip of his drink. "Unless you're simply too drunk to walk at all. Then it's more like a crawl."

He's done that too.

"Hey. You sound like a guy I have a few things in common with. What's your name, anyhow? Mine's Reno."

He offers his hand for a shake, thinks twice, wipes it off on the bar rag, and then offers it again. For a guy who dresses and talks funny, this guy's all right.

He smiles, taking the other man's hand briefly.

"Tom," he replies. "Tom Lefroy."

Indeed, he does feel like they might have a couple of things in common.

"So, Tom." Usually he's more at ease with ladies at a bar, but what the fuck. Maybe it's his turn bartending so he could meet a few asshats he wouldn't normally talk to, not that it matters what the real purpose is. "The fuck you doin' at the end of the friggin' universe?"

It's a good question. Unfair as hell, considering he can't even answer it for himself, but it's fair game. At this place, all questions are.

That's true, and while Tom thinks of a suitable answer, he has another sip of his drink.

"I never quite understood my purpose for being here," he allows, "but I've found that once I saw what it was like, I could not simply return to my life away from it. There is far too much to learn."

No shit: this guy's some sort of a deep thinker. Some half-assed philosopher, maybe.

"Too much to learn, huh?" He gives that idea a healthy bit of skepticism. "So me bein' asked to tend bar, that's just another learning experience?"

Fuck: that sounds like his friggin' mom talking. He hates that. In fact, he hates it enough to take a nice long sip of his Icicle Run, then wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and then wipes his hand on the front of his shirt. Fuck it, the whole thing's gonna have to be cleaned again anyhow. And he ain't gonna do it. There's a reason the dry cleaner down the street from him in Midgar loves his ass so much.
