I Never Tried To Reach Your Eden

[OOC: And Then The Nightmares Come]

David enters the bar quietly and takes some food to a booth where he sits, contemplating life, the universe and everything. the food on his plate.

He looks better for the little sleep he'd gotten, but still doesn't look good.

At least he could smile today if he tried.

There is a gentleman who looks to be in his early thirties sitting nearby, with newspaper and espresso to hand.

David recognises him but does not recognise him.

He raises his cup of tea in a salute of sorts.

"Bonjour," he says, without thinking.

The gentleman does not turn from his newspaper.

"Bonjour, m'sieur David. I hope the day finds you better."

"Better? Better than- you know my name. How?"

He regards the man quickly. He's definitely familiar. "And may I join you?"

Nick wanders over and sits down next to David without much preamble. He then pulls him into a hug.

"You look...slightly better than I feel. How are you, David?"

David instinctively hugs him back, smiling just a little. "I've always been better, but I slept a little, so...

"What has you feeling so down?" he asks when he sits back from the hug, hand on Nick's thigh, comforting.

He sighs and rubs the hand that remains on him before leaning back.

"My...other self did something rather...upsetting. Mostly, we agree on the most...important things, but he found no trouble in doing something which...could very well have hurt the people I love. It was distressing. I suppose...I should be more upset, but I'm...trying to be good about it. LaCroix...LaCroix and Natalie both told me that it wasn't my fault and that they'd rather not see me beat myself up about it, so I'm trying."

He takes a sip. Orange juice?

He grins rather crookedly and points to the cup.

"This is helping a bit. The absurdity and...novelty keeps surprising me out of my guilt."

"It must be strange, having your other self. I can't recall if I've met him or not. And does he regularly come out?

"However, I must say, I'm glad they know it's not your fault. When a person isn't themself..."

He creases his brow.

"If someone is not themself, would you hold them responsible for something?"

He raises an eyebrow at the cup. "A little oranger than I'm used to, I'll admit."

*Meg sees David.

Meg sees the expression in David's eyes, and something about it looks really horribly familiar.

Meg heads over.*

. . . David?

He smiles, just a little, as Meg heads his way. "Bonjour, Meg. How're you?"

Nope, he's not deflecting. Feeling better every second he's not dreaming.

Okay.

How 'bout you?

*She bites her lip.* I've wanted to talk to you the past few days, but I've been in Paris - it was only supposed to be an overnight trip but it looks like it was longer. Stupid Milliways time difference.

"I've had a rough few days," he admits readily. "What's the time different between here and Paris? Between my New Orleans and here, two nights in New Orleans is a night here, I think. Or perhaps it just seems like it.

"What was the trip for?"
