But instead of getting a nifty, neat episodic conclusion, Marian found The Door. Which meant returning to work in the House of Arch for Little Lady Ingress. Which ended of course, naturally and normally. But almost produced a

X slips into a seat at Marian's table, studying the other woman's hands.

She does not say anything, but eventually she looks back up at Marian's face.

Still silent.

X shrugs.

"Maybe."

Some days she is not sure.

"No, maybe."

Marian said. And maybe it was far too much because of seeing people chained to a tree this morning and hearing how many were shoved into cells and seeing people treated like animals.

"Person."

She frowned.

"The only people who aren't are those who think they can get away with treating people as if they aren't."

X shrugs.

"They are the ones that made me."

She is--there are many ways in which X is not human.

"And yet you are here. Without them."

She frowned absently.

"And you worry for people who are not alright. Which is a thing weapons don't have to do."

X nods once.

"I am learning."

The lessons will never fully take.

Marian nodded.

"Me, too."

X frowns.

"You are also a weapon?"

What?

[queenofmay]

"No." Marian said, momentarily almost amused, but not making it.

"I am learning. In my time, I shouldn't even be able to fight as I do. It's nearly against all laws around the property of a woman."

"Oh."

X looks blank.

"I do not understand why."

[queenofmay]

Marian looked caught between highly amused and highly annoyed.

"Because they are weaker. Because they are delicate. Because they shouldn't be endangered. Because it would keep them from having children. Because it isn't fitting. Because they must never be near harm."

The litany was obviously one high in dry irony.

X considers that.

"I am not weak."

And no one has ever tried to keep her from harm.

"Nor am I."

Marian let her hands finally settle back nearly flat on the table.

"But there are many people in my world who still believe it. Of me, and all women."

X considers this, too.

"They will learn."

X would volunteer to help teach them.

"I met someone recently who told me that, as well. Though she told me it would take nearly another six hundred years before liberation for women was well done."

X shrugs.

"I do not know much history."

Not anything that isn't related to battle, that is.
