Sam looks up, and the moody look is replaced by a wry half-smile.
'Oh, hello, Betty,' she says, a little sheepishly. 'I'm sorry -- have you been trying to get my attention? I've been...well, a bit out of it, this evening.'
'I wish I could say it was complicated, but it isn't, really.'

'Had a spot of trouble at work today. It involved me being frightfully rude to an MP.' Thinking quickly, she adds, 'Er, a Member of Parliament -- I don't remember what you call them in America. A politician. Only it sort of happened because he was being rude to me.'
Sam blinks and looks up, a little startled -- more at the interruption than the gentleman's accent.
'Oh, I hope not,' she says, trying to smile. 'Though it did come from the bar, so I suppose I can't rule out the possibility. I've read enough stories to know that magic isn't always predictable.'
She peers back down at her cup, wryly. 'The only trick it's done so far is to go cold, and it certainly doesn't need magic to do that.'

"Is it going to do a trick if you keep looking at it?" This from the man with the british accent and the distinct American twang marring it.
