A Japanese schoolgirl with a yellow sweater and a pile of books sits down at a nearby table, glancing over curiously-- and doing a double-take when she spots the cake.

"Oh," she says cheerfully. "Is it your birthday, sir?"

"What was your first clue?" Greg spares a glare at the cake.

"I'm sorry," Ami says, frowning. "But it could have been something you'd picked up for a friend."

Assumptions are bad! Not to mention highly unscientific.

Haaaappy birthday to you, whistles Random casually, where he's leaning in his seat with his feet propped up on a nearby chair.

His expression is disarmingly innocent.

House growls. Yes, growls. "Not appreciated."

He gives House an amused look.

"And here I thought you'd appreciate the musical interlude."

"Happy birthday." Says a young man nearby with a grin. "Not happy?"

"Not many good memories." Greg shrugs.

"All the more reason to have a better one this time."

"After a while, they all kind of blend together. It's just another day."

There is a voice from somewhere behind House. There is a distinctive Australian accent.

"I didn't know it was your birthday."

Chase approaches his boss, trying not to be too surprised. After all, what does he really know about House's life outside of the hospital?

"It's not." Yeah right. Kind of hard to deny with the cake sitting ominously beside him.

Chase gives him a doubtful look.

"Right," he says, looking from cake to House. "It's not like there's anything to be ashamed of."

House gives him a condescending look. "Not ashamed. Also not interested in celebrating."

Cue one dazed political genius wandering by, still not quite sure how he's going to both live the morning down and keep his job by this time tomorrow.

The cake is pretty ostentatious. Josh finds it in himself to cock an eyebrow. "Is everyone entitled to a cake if the Fates haven't been kind to them today?" He wouldn't mind a cake. Maybe he should get Donna to make him a cake.

"You want the cake? Take the cake. Just know you can't have it and eat it too."

He eyeballs it a little more. "Nah, I couldn't. It's got your name on it. I'm assuming. I've got enough bad karma on me without me stealing some other guy's cake."
