Though he hasn't quite been distant since he spoke to Jack about what was happening outside, he has been quiet. Sometimes, even a little preoccupied.
After David went to sleep, he comes into the bar for a nightcap and to see a certain someone. Ryan brought a book with him that, normally, he'd have finished a few days ago but he'd been sidetracked.
Too busy watching Elaine as she works, he doesn't make much progress with the book.
She can see him as she works. Something is wrong, though he hasn't said or done anything to make her truly worry. But she's usually good at reading him and his quietness concerns her.
When Elaine's shift grows slow enough for her to take a break, she comes to sit down beside him. "Good even, darling," she says softly, kissing him.
