Here's the thing about a Firefly: all of those wacky little twists, turns, and nooks in the interior are good -- no, great -- for freelance transport

"Hullo, Wash. It's been far too long since I spoke with you last."
He notices the baby. "Good Lord, it's been even longer than I thought. It seems like it was just yesterday I'd heard the good news. How is the family?"
"I'm thinking the easiest way might just be to tell everybody to start closing the doors to the stairs on pain of being strung up by their left toenails," Wash says thoughtfully as he circles another spot. "The top level ain't that bad, but the bottom one's..."
A vague, circle-y gesture to the blueprints before he tucks his stylus behind his ear.
"Hopefully not before we install those wall-to-wall trampolines in the cargo bay I've been meaning to talk to Mal about," he remarks wryly. "Maybe some leashes, too."
Naomi, after another few seconds of staring, breaks into a miniature version of her dad's own grin and thrusts out her arms to Simon. "Bah!"
There is a cat sitting up in the rafters. Looking for just a couple more people to take poll of on his pouncing survey. When he looks below though he doesn't see any potential victims candidates.
Instead, the small person in the man's arms attract his attention. She is very cute. And Puss is a real sucker for small and cute.
Puss makes a silly face at her and waves some more.
He eyes the booth, judgeing distance and everything. Then he makes a light leap. Landing on the booth behind Wash's. He climbs up onto the seat and peeks over at the child, still smiling at her.
Giggling and babbling excitedly, Naomi, now that she can do stuff like be mobile (and how cool is THAT?), starts trying to clamber out of Wash's arms to get to the cat.
That finally gets his attention.
"Hey, what's gotten into you?" Wash asks, smiling down at her, then follows her gaze to the cat. He brightens a little. "Well, hey there, you."
Wash may recognize this guy. Bob doesn't really recognize him, though. After all, they only met once, and that was three months ago, and Bob was frazzled and sleep-deprived at the time.
Plus, all these beige-ish people tend to look alike if he's not paying attention.
The blueprints get the Guardian's attention, though. "What are you working on?" he asks, leaning over Wash's shoulder to get a look.
"Wei -- Bob, right?" He gestures to the blueprints with his stylus. "It's just some disturbingly long overdue babyproofing we gotta do on the ship, picking out the trouble spots so we don't end up with kids falling off the catwalks."
Said kid is staring openmouthed at Bob. He's blue. That is AWESOME.
"Shi a, Wash." He grins, bouncing Naomi a bit as he looks down at her; she breaks into a smile that's almost identical to her dad's. "And this is Naomi. She's just over nine months."

Wash looks up, too, but breaks into a grin instead.
"Tom, hey! Good to see you, we're shiny, busy as all hell but -- " He gestures to the other side of the booth. "You wanna sit?"

Naomi keeps staring at him, then offers a solemn, "Ah-bah-buh," and slaps the blueprints again.

Simon slides into the chair next to Wash's and puts down his glass, carefully out of Naomi's reach.

Naomi is all over that.
She cranes her neck back and stares, openmouthed.
(Her dad's still focused on the blueprints.)
