Here's the thing about a Firefly: all of those wacky little twists, turns, and nooks in the interior are good -- no, great -- for freelance transport

There is a cat sitting up in the rafters. Looking for just a couple more people to take poll of on his pouncing survey. When he looks below though he doesn't see any potential victims candidates.
Instead, the small person in the man's arms attract his attention. She is very cute. And Puss is a real sucker for small and cute.
Puss makes a silly face at her and waves some more.
He eyes the booth, judgeing distance and everything. Then he makes a light leap. Landing on the booth behind Wash's. He climbs up onto the seat and peeks over at the child, still smiling at her.
Giggling and babbling excitedly, Naomi, now that she can do stuff like be mobile (and how cool is THAT?), starts trying to clamber out of Wash's arms to get to the cat.
That finally gets his attention.
"Hey, what's gotten into you?" Wash asks, smiling down at her, then follows her gaze to the cat. He brightens a little. "Well, hey there, you."
Wash jumps, eyes almost as wide as Naomi's, but recovers admirably.
"Okay," he says with a weak laugh, "and the talking was not so much with me expecting that. Sorry." He tucks his stylus behind his ear. "You, uh. Are you a real cat or some strange and bizarre species of alien?"
Hey, he's met an alien that looks like a lion. It's a valid question.
Puss grins and accepts the hand, and being that this cat has thumbs hand or paw shake works. "I have not met any alien cats. But I do understand now why some people are so shocked when I speak. I am Puss in Boots."
He shakes and then looks towards the baby and back at Wash, clearly introductions for her must be made as well.
"Gāoxìng jìandào nĭ." It's a firm shake, or as firm as he's willing to make it when dealing with a cat. "And this," he adds, letting go to grasp Naomi's hand gently, "is my daughter Naomi. Can you say hi?"
He wiggles her hand, miming a wave. Naomi just giggles and offers another string of baby babbling.
And then she tries to squirm out of Wash's arm's again, because clearly, fuzzy things are meant for grabbing.
"Mucho gusto." Puss says, bowing his head. He smiles at Naomi and bows towards her as well, "It is a pleasure to meet you as well señorita."
Puss takes a seat on the back of the booth, out of reach of Naomi. Sorry, but he knows little ones and thier penchant for squeezing soft furry things and then drooling on them. He does give her another wave and silly face though.
"It is Mandarin Chinese," he answers, straightening and slipping into a pitch-perfect imitation of Puss' demeanor. Minus the Spanish accent. Dropping the imitation on the next, "Everybody back home speaks 'em both, it makes for some crazy bilingual explanations whenever I'm in here."

He waves and smiles at her from above.

Naomi is all over that.
She cranes her neck back and stares, openmouthed.
(Her dad's still focused on the blueprints.)

He then gives Naomi a look that asks, 'is he always this wierd?'.
"No señor, I am a cat." He assures.

...It could be a beaming of agreement! You never know.
Wash, meanwhile, holds up one hand in protest. "Just making sure," he says. "The last big talking cat I ran into was an alien.
And, after a second's hesitation, the raised hand turns into a proffered handshake. (Pawshake?)
"I'm Wash."

And then he cocks his head.
"What language is that?"
It sounds familiar, but he can't quite place it. And the irony of somebody from his 'verse ever asking that question is not lost on him at all.

"It is spanish." He answers proudly, then tilts his head, "And yours?" He means the one other then english of course.
