Card tricks are a useful thing, good for distracting oneself. Or for keeping one's hands busy while contemplating other things. The far-off look in Hughes' eyes suggests the latter use tonight. That does not mean the display may not be entertaining. Even lost in contemplation (of what is anyone's guess), the man has finesse that could make a stage ( Read more... )

Drizzt looks around from his seat at the bar and notices Hughes, more precisely his uniform.

Approacing Hughes, Drizzt pushes the white hair out of his violet eyes and tucks it back in place behind his pointed ears.

"Good evening sir, I do not believe we have met before. I am Drizzt Do`Urden, lone Drow of Mithril Hall."

Hughes' eyes narrow slightly behind his glasses as he looks up. It is thought, or perhaps curiousity, rather than hostility, Drizzt's appearance being utterly alien to the Amestrian. "Maes Hughes, formerly of Amestris. It's good to meet you." A swift grin follows the statement, marking it as, at least, mostly true. The cards are set aside for the moment, and one hand extended.

Drizzt extends his hand in what he has learned is the acceptable posture for greeting. Though he is not that big his muscles are well toned and his hand shake is a solid one.

"Formerly? That sounds like there is an interesting story to that."

His tone conveys that he wont push if Hughes does not want to tell.

Hughes' as well, the calluses on his hands speaking of familiarity with weaponry more so than with card tricks. A match to the uniform, one might suppose.

"I died," he replies, quiet and simple. "And so I'm no longer really a man of Amestris, as one normally judges it. I suppose I'm a wanderer now." His smile and shrug fall somewhat hollow.

There's just something about shuffling cards that attracts attention. Possibly it is the noise. Nothing else quite manages that same quick rip of sound.

Whatever it is, it pauses Ace on her way to the couch, her customary mug of cocoa in hand.
"Poker, Go Fish, Spider, Speed, or War?" She hazards, curiously.

"None of the above. They're no good for playing alone. I suppose I could play Solitaire, but..." A quick upward turn of one hand accompanies an ever-so-slightly rueful grin. "It's never been able to hold my attention."

"I always figure I've misplaced a Jack or sommat, can't ever seem t'finish them." Ace admits in return. "S'why the cards then?"

"I think they migrate. Cards, I think, must have some level of sentience." He thinks for a moment, before answering the question. "Card tricks. I wouldn't want to get rusty." True enough, though he could not answer why if asked. "Besides, they keep my hands busy."
