Card tricks are a useful thing, good for distracting oneself. Or for keeping one's hands busy while contemplating other things. The far-off look in Hughes' eyes suggests the latter use tonight. That does not mean the display may not be entertaining. Even lost in contemplation (of what is anyone's guess), the man has finesse that could make a stage magician jealous.
Thoughtful or no, he is naturally sociable, and would not be at all adverse to company. Or, barring that, an audience. He can pull coins from behind someone's ear too.
