"She's a mermaid!" Urquhart says. "In all your books and stories, did you never hear about mermaids? They lure young men to their watery graves. She is hunting you!"
"This is the Caribbean inlet, which is the sea of stories, where all the myths that sailors tell are real!" Urquhart says, his voice a bark to startle the boy out of his bewitchment.
Urquhart shoots her, the crossbow bolt hitting her in the arm.
She howls in rage, lets go of the dog, and launches herself right out of the water.
Urquhart shoots her again, and she falls back with a snarl, vanishing underneath the water's surface, and flees. After a moment, both the bolts come bobbing to the surface.
Franz is still in the water, barking and snarling and trying to follow the dangerous evil fishcatwoman. "Fetch!" Urquhart orders instead, and the dog swims to retrieve the bolts.
Crossbow bolts don't grow on trees. At least not in their finished state.
Urquhart bends down to put a hand on William's shoulder. "She bewitched you!" he says. He snaps his fingers sharply before William's eyes, hoping to snap the boy out of the spell.
Tamara swims away, furious. Tall, broad, long blond hair like a mermaid, not unpleasant in a furry kind of way. She won't forget that one. She'll get her own back...
Urquhart takes his crossbow bolts from the dog and puts them away. Then, he kneels down to hug the wet dog. "You're such a good dog, even if you smell," he tells him. "You're the best. I'd suggest you've earned yourself a big marrow-bone."
Bone!
Franz knows that word, and madly wags his tail.
"And you might feel better with a proper whisky inside you, boy. Better pick up your book."
"You two, go ahead to the bar," Urquhart says, "and I'll go and get my basket of wild garlic and then provide you with both. I personally could just about murder a fish pie."
He's done most of his chores and is reading some Jules Verne and enjoying being near so much water.

Franz bites her, really hard.

"Yeah, but those are stories and out in the ocean not in a lake."

Franz snarls and digs in his teeth.

His book didn't go far and he picks it up, how would it ever be explained to anyone back home if he was drowned in the Milliways' lake.

He's a very proud dog. He chased away the evil fishcatwoman, and his master promised him a bone!
