Mostly to Marine Wives off base:

How long did your housing application take?

I love how I haven't even set a date for this wedding [have to wait til he's gets stationed] and I'm stressing about stuff already. I'm making myself sick.

Sorry. I've been using livejournal for 6 years, before you could even use tags, so I never got in the habit of using them.

I don't really understand why you're asking wives off base?

We currently live off base but we lived on base right after getting married. About two-three weeks after getting married we had a house. Well, they offered us a house the day we went in but we weren't happy with it. It was disgusting and was slated to be torn down in less than a year anyway. So we said no, got back on the list, and shortly were offered a much better house. But really, it will depend on where you're going to be. The housing situation is different at every base. I heard stories of people who'd been waiting for 3+ months to get a house.

If you're going to live off base you won't go through the housing office. You'll need to find an apartment or house on your own.

so my husband and i got married at the time we did partly because of the housing situation. i am in college and we decided that it would be smarter for us to get housing the semester before the last semester so that I could have a house by the time i graduated and moved down there. So we got married in December 2007 and because he's so cute, got our housing app date back dated to October 2007 AND (can u guess) we are number 9 on the list! YES NINE!!!! it has been 5 months (7 mpnths officially) and we will probally get housing by the end of this month... but we're in az, and where we are the housing is really nice, but yeah... 6 months on average...

Oh gah. Housing pissed me off. They told us it'd be like 6+ months of waiting and then they called us with a house after we'd been down here three weeks. Literally RIGHT after we dropped all the money on our apartment's security deposit/rent and had moved in. We figured they wouldn't give us any housing pay since we would be living in base housing then so it'd be like throwing that 1200 we just spent out the window. It irritated my husband because they acted so shocked we'd moved into an apartment 'so fast' like we were supposed to have been living on the street somewhere waiting around for them to call. Wow that was really long and personal but my point is I think it just depends. To be honest before I moved I really wanted to live on base. I thought it would be nicer, safer, cheaper, etc. Which might be true for some areas but we totally make money off of our housing allowance because our rent is cheap. We're literally 2 minutes from the front gate of the base and still in a nice safe place. Just saying don't rule out the idea of ( ... )

We wont be getting married until he gets stationed so we can figure out a better date. I don't know much about anything, and I can't ask him because he's at MCT so no phone, but I don't get it - am I supposed to wait around at home alone, a married woman, until we get housing where he is stationed?

You'll probably just have to get an apartment or something until housing calls if you want to live with him. Is there any particular reason why you want to live on base? I had thought about letting Chris go ahead of me to the base and finding us a place and then me move down separate but we ended up going together. After being apart for bootcamp and tech school the last thing I wanted to do was sit around at home more especially after we were married. For the first week or so we stayed at a temporary lodging thing on base which was like a little apartment. They gave him a week off to find housing too. I'm not sure how it works as far as that in the marines or if he only got those days because he got married before he got to the base. I used AHRN.com to find our apartment. You can search by what his housing allowance should be. When you register on the site it'll say some crap about having to verify you're military but all you have to do is check a box and you can make an account. They had a lot of places up there and some with ( ... )

I don't want to live on base I want to live on base. A Marine wife told me I have we have to apply for off base housing as well [to get BAH maybe?].

MCT is military combat training. Another 28 days of not being able to talk to him after three months of not being able to talk to him in bootcamp. Boooo =[

they say the gernreal wait is 6-18 months. We got rushed because the house we were going to rent out in town, the realetor screwed us over so we got a house in about a month. i would apply as soon as you get married and have his orders.
