She was in one of the surly, grumpy moods that... well, this was the kind of mood that'd led to her writing that original letter to Saetan. Which meant that her cousin Morton -- who had come with for a few hours to make sure the girls were set and that the place really was safe -- was

"Sister," Jaenelle said gently as she and Smoke walked up the steps after exploring the woods nearby. "It's not nice to threaten Morton when all he is doing is trying to look after the people he cares about."

"If he'd stop relentlessly trying to convince me that everything is perfectly all right, I'd be in a much more cheerful -- and less threatening -- mood," Karla said, glaring at Morton out of the corner of her eye.

"You'd think I'd be used to this," Morton said, leaning back just slightly.

"Are you accustomed to moving witches where they don't care to go, Warlord?"

Oh yes. Someone else was clearly still not pleased by the turn of events that had led to her and Karla being sent into a strange realm.

"There are no province queens to be found here," she added, looking at Karla with a worried frown.

"No, but I am accustomed to her moods," Morton said, now looking at Jaenelle warily.

"There are no Queens of any kind here," Karla said grimly. "I've checked. There are spots where it seems like the people I sense have power, but it isn't like anything we know already."

Kit was coming back from a quick trip through town when she noticed some unfamiliar faces. She slowed down and took a good look at the newcomers as she approached the porch.

Again with the sensing power. Mother Night, this was going to drive Karla crazy. She didn't let it show, though, and instead lifted a hand in a vague wave. "Hi."

"Hi! Are you a new student?" asked Kit, smiling.

"I am, and she is," she said, pointing to Jaenelle, who was talking to Morton about something or other. "He's not, though."

"Aaaaaa!" *Thump*

Connor fell from somewhere above to land on the front lawn. He glowered up at the sky and muttered; "Ride home."

Karla eyed the fallen pile of person warily. "Do people often fall from the sky here?"

"Not so far as I know." He rose and brushed dirt from his pants. "I'm sure I'd have heard of it by now. I guess you're new in town?"

Karla nodded slightly, still wary. "I am."
