Carriage House Front Porch, Saturday afternoon

To say Karla was in a bad mood would be understating it a bit. She was in one of the surly, grumpy moods that... well, this was the kind of mood that'd led to her writing that original letter to Saetan. Which meant that her cousin Morton -- who had come with for a few hours to make sure the girls were set and that the place really was safe -- was ( Read more... )

Kit was coming back from a quick trip through town when she noticed some unfamiliar faces. She slowed down and took a good look at the newcomers as she approached the porch.

Again with the sensing power. Mother Night, this was going to drive Karla crazy. She didn't let it show, though, and instead lifted a hand in a vague wave. "Hi."

"Hi! Are you a new student?" asked Kit, smiling.

"I am, and she is," she said, pointing to Jaenelle, who was talking to Morton about something or other. "He's not, though."

"Oh, cool. Welcome to Milieux! I'm Kit and I live in this dorm, too," she said, offering her hand.

Karla created a Sapphire shield around her hand in the split second before shaking Kit's hand. "I'm Karla."

"Good to meet you, Karla. I hope you don't have any trouble settling in. If you need anything, I'm in room 8," said Kit.

"Oh, you're right next door, then," Karla said. "Jaenelle and I are in room 10."

Kit seemed nice enough, so Karla had no trouble telling her that little bit of information. Plus they did need to start blending in and meeting people.

Not to mention the fact that whenever they were in their room, it was going to have shields on it to keep people out and make them knock first. If Kit were secretly an agent of Dorothea -- though looking at the girl, Karla couldn't seriously imagine that one -- they'd know she was coming.

"Good! We'll definitely see a lot of each other, then," said Kit. "There's usually a brunch in town on Sunday morning, either at the Divine Leaf or the Coven. And the student center is a great place to grab a snack or watch tv."

Kit was almost feeling like her old self as she chatted. She had fuzzy memories of helping the rest of the new students at Blackwood Hall get settled in after she arrived a day early, before all the trouble started.

"... TV?"

Saetan had explained it to her and Jaenelle briefly, but she still didn't get it.

"Yeah, and they even have something called cable. I'm not sure what that is, exactly, but there's a lot more channels than we get at home!" said Kit.

"Well, we don't get any... channels... where I'm from," Karla said, still a little confused but smiling cheerfully. "So no matter what, it's more channels."

"There's some great stuff you've got to watch, then," said Kit. "There's one channel that shows only soap operas. It's a great way to catch up on the ones you've missed."

"... soap operas?" TV officially confused Karla and she'd yet to even see it.

"It's kind of like a serial novel, except it's on TV and acted out by all sorts of pretty people," explained Kit.

Karla considered this. She did like novels and she did like pretty people. What? She was fifteen. She could be remarkably shallow sometimes.

"Interesting," she said. "Is being pretty a requisite for being on one of these soap operas?"
