Pierce's DecisionmajorwesjansonOctober 24 2014, 02:48:23 UTC
Pierce deciding to let Gilbert win the game actually really fits his character. For several seasons, Pierce has been shown to be isolated and lonely, just wanting to make friends. At first he sees Jeff as a younger version of himself, and tries to bond, but Jeff rejects him (Jeff is afraid of becoming like his father, and sees Pierce as what he could end up as, a lonely old man). He surprisinly bonds with Troy, but then Troy and Abed become closer and Pierce is left alone again. He starts to provoke the group, lashing out at being isolated and pushed away, but also his way of keeping control- if they are going to abandon him, Pierce will make it be on his terms and force the issue

I really like your analysis of this. I had never thought of it before, but I agree with it-- I especially like how you note that Pierce feels adrift in the group. I never thought of it before, but it must have been hard for Pierce to find a place, especially with all that had happened the year prior.
I've noticed, but never really paid attention, to Chang's weird mouth-tongue gesture at Annie. It almost seems more like he just had his mouth open and was staring at her but it's obscene because it's Chang. Your thoughts? Was there more motion to that which I missed?
That's the famed "Chang tongue" that I've heard the cast talk about in interviews. I think it's just a weird thing Ken Jeong does and it's not really related to the story. (Oh, Chang tongue! I found the link.)
I unfortunately don't have a lot to add except to say that I really like all of these episode, First Chang's Dynasty especially, and I like Chang's descent into madness. I see First Chang Dynasty on a lot of people's "worst" (or not great) episode lists and I don't understand why. Although, I am in general a huge fan of heist movies, so. But Jeff and Britta in those outfits??? Fantastic and I would give the episode an A just for that.
I'm not sure exactly what, if anything, I really have to contribute regarding these episodes. It certainly is a fun and enjoyable batch of eps, but as I've gotten further entrenched in the Jeff and Annie fandom, I have definitely realized that there is very little J/A interaction here, not much that particularly does anything to advance their relationship or even many moments together. It's not to say that I don't like this stretch of the show; quite the contrary. I just don't find a whole lot to analyze or pick apart..... I may have something later, after I've gotten a chance to rewatch them.
Course Listing Unavailable: As far as the lawyer goes, I think it totally could be Evil Jeff, but if it was, it was kind of a random reference to get dropped, although I guess it did forshadow the Season Finale, and maybe Dan had a bigger plan for the whole Evil Study Group takeover but had to change it. As it is, it's a cool reference, but it made me hope for the whole Evil Study Group to cross over.
I have mixed thoughts about the Britta therapy thing, but I did like how she was legitimately trying to help, and Jeff's asides in that conversation are some of my favorite things ever. I also love how Troy is supportive of Britta (stupid season 4), and how Jeff was perfectly fine until he found out about the need for Summer School-- then the morning started.
As far as the riot thing goes, lunarblue21 and I have talked in the past about how the interplay between Jeff's speech and Annie's could be read as "coupley"-- Annie takes her cue from him, and she surprises the Dean by definitely not being the "sugar" to

Digital Estate PlanningI really like this episode. I never really took Abed and Hilda's 'relationship' to be any more than a one off thing, although I do find it to be believable, because we all know how in-character Abed gets, and it is pretty honorable that he wants to stay behind and help look after her
( ... )
We also get a really good moment from Jeff protecting Annie, and does anyone else find it to be amusing that he's protecting her from Hippies (i.e. Vaughn), but killing her, which I just realized is kind of a good illustration of where their relationship is at the moment-- Jeff is trying to protect Annie from him hurting her by refusing to be in a relationship with her, but in the process he is unintentionally hurting her. Really, they need to work together to make sure their relationship works.
Wow, I never connected the hippies to Vaughn, and considering that Jeff in S1 was so vehemently against Annie/Vaughn from the outset, so it makes sense that even three entire years later, he's still trying to protect her from hippies who he thinks have the potential to take advantage of her.
And, oh Jeff. That reminds me of a JA one sentence fic I wrote: "He wants to protect her from himself, but he can't protect himself from the way she makes him feel. And your description of Jeff trying to protect Annie from himself to prevent her getting

Ooh what fic is that? I've probably already read it, but I'd really like to reread it!
[because this woman has turned his world upside down and it's not right if she's not in it so he can't imagine himself not being friends with her or her cutting him out of his life because she's important to him]
This whole paragraph describes what Jeff's going through perfectly, but especially that last line-- and yet he's still terrified to be with her, because he doesn't want to hurt her (and he can't see that not being with her is hurting her just as much.)
And I LOVE your point about how impressive his self restraint is. And that's how you know Jeff actually feels something for her-- because he's not willing to approach her sexually and have that be it-- he knows that if it ever happens, it will *mean* something, and he doesn't know what to do with that, so he holds her at arms length in an attempt to 'protect' her from him.
And yes, Annie is definitely the Queen of his heart :).
Hehe, well, it is pretty funny. I bet Jeff now has a pathological hatred of hippies because of Vaughn....

Erm, it's in the comment already because I haven't posted it anywhere, either to Tumblr or ff.net or ao3. It's here *points forward*: "He wants to protect her from himself, but he can't protect himself from the way she makes him feel."
Admittedly, I got the idea for writing a one-sentence fic from stopthenrewind on tumblr, but I haven't posted it anywhere yet because it's one of the first JA kinda fics I did and well, you know me, I usually write muuuch longer stuffs. :PP
