Hmmm... I'm not all of those things either. I enjoyed stumbling upon the queer end of Bourbon Street, though, especially since a very nice young man hit on me. =)

Mozzies, cockroaches and drunks are certainly unpleasant, but we get all three in Sydney from time to time, so I've learnt how to deal with them.

It's sounding more and more like Sydney. No wonder I liked it. =) (Sydney has the largest multicultural cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere, and also the fabulous Camerdown Cemetery in Newtown, which I've spent many a night hanging out in with other kinky goths. The groundskeepers had learnt that all us freaky people cleaned up after ourselves and helped keep vandals away, so they were very friendly to us.)

Hurricanes, unlike earthquakes, you at least get some good warning about!

Rubbish! We have plenty of warning for earthquakes! We know there's about a ⅔ chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years-how much more warning than that could you possibly want? =P

I can handle a small town overrun with tourists-I've lived in Amsterdam. Crime? Oakland.

Oakland's murder rate was almost 29 per 100 000 per year in 2008. That's not good - it's almost three times the rate for California as a whole - but it's less than half of New Orleans's rate of almost 64, placing it among the murder capitals of the world, beating out Cape Town. Things got a lot worse there after the hurricane.

So I don't think you should be comparing New Orleans to Oakland. Caracas, or Cape Town, or Fruitvale, maybe, but not Oakland as a whole.

Hmmmm... beating Cape Town says something, but Cape Town was the only city in South Africa where I didn't think walking from my car to the hostel wasn't a completely stupid idea. I still didn't stop for red lights at night, though... so, um, yeah, I guess that says something. But if you'd compared it with Jo'burg or Pretoria, it would say more.

Thanks.

You ought to click through on the links; the "murder capitals" link says, "A European bastion in the heart of turbulent South Africa, picturesque Cape Town nonetheless has the country’s highest murder rate. The city’s homicides usually take place in suburban townships rather than in the more upscale urban areas where tourists visit."

In other words, Johannesburg and Pretoria have lower murder rates than Cape Town or New Orleans.
