We've had a problem with baguettes and bags-- namely, they fall out of conventionally-proportioned bags, causing one to either hold the baguette in one's hand, or juggle it along with the rest of the bags.
I don't know how to describe it. It's super-skinny open cables alternating with blocks. :)
Basically: After making your base chain or what have you, do three doubles, then skip two stitches and do a triple in the third. One chain, and then do another triple in the first skipped stitch, making the second triple cross behind the first. Then three doubles, etc.
Then on the next row, you do the two triples in the third and first of each double in the preceding row, and put your three doubles into the chain between the two triples in the preceding row.
I could probably diagram it better than I can explain it.
I might need to see a diagram, or the thing as partially made. I think I've never figured out how to do the chaining you're describing. (Or I've forgotten the term for it. I am very, very bad with terms. *sigh*)
