Beeftastrophe

Our freezer beef is ruined. Not all of it, but a LOT of it, and mostly the good stuff. What's left is mostly ground beef, a couple of arm roasts, soup bones, and a package of short ribs. That's all that survived the Meltdown of '08. I'm glad I caught it before even that thawed out into ruination. Stupid useless cheap-ass electrical outlet situation ( Read more... )

Man, that does suck. There is nothing like a good side of cow.

Where did you order it from? My parents bring us beef from Minnesota all of the time, but if there is a place that does it relatively locally (and really tasty), I'll have them save the trip on their end...

I hope the Chili turns out great!

In the meantime, you have a new adage. It's no longer, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade." "When life defrosts your beef, make chili!" ;-)

We got our quarter-cow from a friend of my husband's. He has a really small operation in Manchester. I was so proud of my effort to "eat local!" Not only that, but it was SO GOOD. But yeah, I will be experimenting with chili in its many forms. I have a black bean chili on my menu planner already.

Awww, that sucks. My ex-husband was really weird about never wanting us to "stock up" on anything like that. Apparently his mother used to buy meat in bulk, and something like that happened to them one time, and they lost all the meat.

At least you were able to salvage some of it.

That really sucks. Does it smell? My parents went away in the middle of July once and their refrigerator downstairs blew the cooling mechanism. . .the fridge had a turkey inside. They had to move out for a week until the house got fumigated.

There was the faintest beginning of that rank odor that I associate with spoiled or nearly-spoiled meat. I wasn't willing to risk getting ill by keeping it and hoping for the best ( ... )

When we bought our house in 2004, we had a massive (strangers-greeting-us-in-the-streets-two-weeks-later, sword-fighting-in-the-backyard massive) housewarming party where we had all kinds of delicious meat. It was kind of a BYOM affair ( ... )

Damn, that just sucks. When we lived in Boston we had a really nice, big freezer out in our garage. Of course, we couldn't take it when we moved to England, so we had to sell it. It was FULL of food - frozen veggies, tons of meat - several hundred dollars worth of food. I had to throw it all away and it was like taking a big wad of cash and tossing it into a garbage bag. What an awful feeling that was. It's not quite the same as the freezer croaking on you, but I can relate to having to toss out all that meat. It was very depressing.
