Please pimp this around. It's only for my own edification, but I'm curious about this phenomenon. IP logging has been turned off and anonymouse comments are allowed if people feel the need for some reason.

I've worked in customer service my entire career. To me, a ringing phone = ARG PEOPLE WHO ARE STUPID ARE GOING TO MAKE ME DO THINGS FOR THEM ARG.

I used to talk on the phone all the time. Now just... geh.

Apart from the general phone fear, I also have this fear about calling the wrong number. If it's a number I don't know by heart, I usually cut it off part way through dialing at least once.

Wow, do I feel a lot less alone now.

I used to think it was only me who had these issues.

On the last question, I'd say it's a combination of the lack of non-verbal cues and a lack of self-confidence. With a dash of being convinced as I'm making the call that I'm interupting something important. (But it's primarily the non-verbal cues so that's what I answered.)

Once I'm actually on the phone, I'm fine... but the picking up and actually calling is horrible. And it's really pretty much universal across all communication for me.

I hate the telephone. I don't understand why people let it rule their lives. My loved ones have my cell phone number -- my land line goes unplugged for days at a time. And if the phone rings when I don't feel like answering? I don't. This is apparently impossible for some people.

Bottom line, I think the phone was invented as a convenience. When I start letting it rule my life? Not convenient. So I don't. And not many people have my cell phone number :)

Tks for this poll! What prompted it?
