OK I just watched "Quo Vadis" last weekend in my "Biblical Epics for Easter" marathon so I'm borrowing the basic plot from that. Also I borrowed some SG-1 folks rather liberally ( ... )

John is furious and determined to find Elizabeth. When Jack swears on his oath as a Roman officer that Elizabeth is not in the house, John hires a creepy little man named Ladon to track down a gathering of this cult, and they bring along Teal'c, the champion gladiator, for protection. What John hears that night, from the preacher called Daniel, shocks him. A soldier would obviously not understand the concept of "turning the other cheek." He can't fathom why Elizabeth would devote herself to this nonsense ( ... )

Lorne goes to summon General Hammond to return to rescue Rome from Lucius. John goes to the prison to try and get Elizabeth out but ends up being arrested himself. Jack and his wife are also arrested (Laura and Radek left Rome with Daniel to continue preaching), and Elizabeth must watch her foster parents sacrificed to the lions. Jack makes a bold speech, however, before he dies, telling the mob that Lucius is to blame for the fire. Daniel also appears, having been summoned back to Rome by a vision, and is also arrested and killed. Before Daniel dies, he marries John and Elizabeth while they wait in the jail cells ( ... )

Whoa... it's like Gladiator meets Francine Rivers' Mark of the Lion trilogy (the absolute best Christian fiction EVER written. Actually, some of the best historical fiction every written, period).

It also reminds me somewhat of The Robe, though I've only seen that once.

I haven't seen "The Robe" myself. It's the only big epic film of that type I haven't seen.

The original novel "Quo Vadis" was written by a Polish nationalist and is a metaphor for the suffering of the Polish people under the rule of Russia. The writer went on to win a Nobel Prize for literature.
