1. Because she's herself. She is her flawed, frelled-up, happy go lucky self and she knows it. She doesn't try to justify herself to the rest of the crew. Even though she is the outsider amongst outsiders. She gets on with it. She's an adorably vulnerable and an incredibly strong person.

1. Her dad was never there, not once. Not ever. I don't believe she had any kind of father-figure or maybe even a proper parental figure 'till she met Bill.

2. When she was a kid, painting was her escape. It was somewhere she could go were things didn't have to hurt. Where she could truly lose herself.

3. She doesn't love love Leoben. But she can't truly condemn him either. She despises him and looks to him at the same time. Because she sees herself reflected in him.

Complexity. He's a man of many, many layers. He's awesome because even when you think you might know him, you don't. He's snarky on the outside and dark on the inside. He tries to do the right thing. Which he knows, from bitter experience, isn't the easy thing.
