Don't look at me for sympathy regarding fic size. My 'short and sweet' fic for an exchange this holiday season turned out to be 5000 words and I was happy!
*has this problem ALL THE FUCKING TIME* WOE, and I hear ya. I have one I am TOTALLY trying to hold to under the limit for a single post, and I am about 90% sure I am going to fail. Rar.
It drives me crazy! I have to keep telling myself, Self, you do NOT have to write every seemingly-awesome idea you've ever had into ONE FIC. No, really. There can be others. And see, one of the reasons you don't write more often is because you put EVERY IDEA YOU HAVE INTO ONE FIC. And then you're left with nothing.
*hugs* My so-called 'small gift' also ended up quite a way over! I think it's really important to write what you have to, without being constrained by word limits. :)
Oh, I knew I'd be over. I was figuring @ 5K or so. But right now, I have, let's say 5/9 of the beginning written, and the end section is written, which is another 1/9 - for a current total of 6,354 words. But I still have three more scenes to write to connect them together, which will probably - knowing myself - bring the tally close to 10K words. I just don't even know! :-P I really did intend to write something shortish. Ah well.
Heh. Sort of why I never try to do drawbles. They always insist they need more work, and why not add several extra details while I am at it? Which of course isn't the same as writing fic, but, um, anyway.
Like, a simple line sketch doesn't feel complete. It's more similar than you think. I mean, I could write a story that was only dialogue (and have - a crack ficlet years ago) but it's the details - movement and atmosphere - that bring things to life. Even, in your case, the way you draw the individual stones on the dungeon wall, or that awesomely eerie green glow. "The devil is in the details," or so they say. :)
I know a lot of people who can tell a complete story in 1000 words or less. Alas, I don't appear to be one them.
