This is what I've noticed:
In the north, the mountains are covered in roads that wind up, over, around and through them. In the southwest, the mountains are dry and harsh and the roads avoid them altogether. In California, the mountains are covered in houses.

Sometimes, this place seems too surreal.

Two things today.

Number one is this: I am a vegetarian, for ethical and personal reasons. It's a lifestyle choice. I haven't eaten meat since I was twelve years old, and I'm certainly not going to start eating it again simply because you hold a chicken leg in front of my face and say "mmmm, Kylee, it's so yuuuuuuummy!" Yesterday we went to see Papo's grave. He was my great-grandfather, but I'd never met him. Before yesterday, I'd never even had a thought of him. But we went to see him, and there he was, dead and gone and in my head for the first time. We picked up a family friend from the airport last week. She's staying with us for a little while, to escape the cold. Crowded- yes. Happy to see someone new- yesyesyes.

Las Vegas was a disappointment. An overly-sexualized, fake franchise, the whole city. But what was I expecting? I don't know. We did stay in a castle, though. Points.

Whoa. This week has seemed so busy and fast. In reality it wasn't, I'm sure. But still, time is funny like that. On Monday we went to Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge and climbed a mountain that I'm still not positive we were actually allowed to climb. Yesterday we went to the Amargosa Opera House, which is this beautiful little building that used to be a run down old theater, until a woman named Marta Becket broke down in Death Valley, stumbled upon it, and rented it the next day.
