This afternoon we met with Fr. Carley for the second and last time regarding our marriage preparation duties. There was a form he needed to fill out - our names and addresses, parents' names, whether we'd been baptized, understood the commitment we're about to make, etc. - but all it all it was fairly innocuous. Seems way complicated for people who just want to spend the rest of their lives together and love each other and be responsible for each other. Who came up with these rules and procedures anyhow, and to what purpose? Some of them just plain confuse and mystify me just as if one of the stipulations were to bury a half-eaten orange on the second thursday (second wednesday if the years are evenly divisible by 3.14) while dressed as a tamale and singing something by David Bowie. It's like, what exactly is the practical purpose of some things? And it always seems different for everybody. I'm worried for if/when I ever get married, what kind of weirdness I should be prepared for!

In our case, it wasn't bad. My particular priest happens to be fairly relaxed and did, in fact, makes things quite easy for us. But in my case, it's not as simple as wanting to spend my life with someone else; the religious aspects add to what I think of as marriage, so I needed and wanted to find ways to incorporate them into my married life ( ... )
