I'm back! I was on vacation with my parents and brother in Washington, D.C. from Friday 'til today. My feet have only recently forgiven me, after spending 8 hours sitting in the car

I loved visiting DC when we went last year! It sounds like you did such cool stuff! You saw a lot more than I did - I'm jealous. I'm so glad you had a good time; keep on enjoying the heck outta your summer! You earned it!
Heehee! I'm from the DC area (Franconia-Springfield, last stop on the Blue Line). It's fun to think of you visiting my childhood haunts. Also the places we took everyone when they came to visit us. I'd have recommended places if I knew. (Like, insider tip: the museum with the best cafeteria is American Indian, hands down. With Native American-inspired dishes from every region!)
The American History museum is a lot of fun. I got a kick out of Julia Child's kitchen the last time I was there, now that I cook. :)
We used to go to Mount Vernon at Christmas to sing carols and drink hot apple cider. I always ogled the furniture and wallpaper. I think they've totally renovated the museum since the last time I was there, though.
Haha, no way!! We took that line almost every day we were there, since we were staying in Rosslyn. :) I keep forgetting that you're not actually from Boston - had I remembered, I would definitely have asked you for recommendations! I would have loved to try out the American Indian cuisine, even though my mother is rather reticent to try any dish that's not European or Chinese. There was a festival going on on the mall while we were there with South American, African and Thai food, too, but we opted for the BBQ because we knew what we'd be getting. :-P
Mount Vernon is amazing. I would love to go caroling there - it must be so much fun!! The mansion is gorgeous, and I think it has been renovated recently. Right now, they're redoing the outside of the house, painting and throwing sand to make the wood look like stone. :)
Oh, the cafe has something for everyone-- there's just more of a focus on indigenous foods, which are really pervasive when you think about it. (Potatoes? Tomatoes? Corn?) And Thanksgiving-y foods like turkey and squash. I was always very fond of the pulled buffalo sandwich myself.
I'm also very fond of the gelato stands inside the Natural History Museum and the National Gallery of Art. (My default icon is of my favorite painting in the collection, Monet's "Woman with a Parasol.")
Mount Vernon is amazing at Christmas, especially if it snows (though you have to be reeeeally lucky to get snow before Christmas in Virginia).
