On New Year's Eve, Liz goes to Jenna's party.
(Paul is part Jenna, part Cher. Jenna duets with him, and Liz thinks Carol would've enjoyed it... then she downs three glasses of champagne like they're shots. Which is a bad idea. And different for her because she doesn't even drink shots like they're shots.)
She mingles. Tries to be friendly. Almost succeeds.
(She's not saying anything *mean,* but she finds herself grimacing.)
Jack texts her: I won't be able to make it. Avery doesn't feel up to going out.
(She's disappointed and relieved, and she wonders if Jack ever intended on showing up. Because why would he want to come to Jenna's party? Maybe he and Avery are at some event, and Avery looks super pretty even though she's seven months pregnant... wait, that makes it sound like pregnant women are disgusting. She doesn't believe that. But Avery could pull off a maternity evening gown better than others, and she's going to stop thinking about Avery.)
Liz tells Jenna the contents of Jack's text. Jenna clenches a fist; mutters something about how babies always *win.* Paul rubs her shoulders.
As midnight gets closer--
(She thinks, I don't have anyone to kiss.)
--she slinks off to the bathroom and locks herself inside. Leaning against the sink, she waits for the Happy New Year shout.
(She pretends she's not thinking about Carol, about how he left, or about Jack, about how maybe she wishes he were hers, or maybe she just wants Avery's life, wants a baby and a husband and someone to be with during the holidays... and all the time. She wants someone who won't need to run away from her.)
Outside, there's celebration. Paul, in his Cher voice, sings, "I would not turn back time, because I'm looking forward to 2011!"
(It fits awkwardly with the melody.)
Liz doesn't move.
