The first time they kiss is in Karen's car. Pam feels herself tense in surprise even though she was expecting it; it's like wariness has become a reflex. Karen doesn't pull away, and Pam wonders why she always has to find herself entangled with people who know what they want. She'd like to drift for a while, to not be under pressure to figure things out. But she's always stumbling into situations where she has to give an answer. "I can't" is close to becoming her motto, and it gets a little closer when she says it after she pulls away. Her lips feel dry, her mouth even drier. She clears her throat, repeats it.
"I'm sorry."
"You don't have anything to be sorry for." Karen shakes her head. "You don't... it's not like... you know."
She doesn't know, but she thinks Karen is trying to say this wasn't meant to be something serious. Just a kiss. And that's when it occurs to her this might be her opportunity to float. Be something to someone but not their everything.
Pam opens her mouth to explain, as if she could. She pulls Karen closer for their second kiss. Her head spins, and she doesn't worry about the future.
