Do they scab up after they are done?
Yes, and then they peel away. You have to put vitamin E ointment or whatever the tattooist prescribes for you.

how long does the scab last?
Maybe a month or two.

What happens if you pick at it?
Coupla things can happen: you can make parts of it blotchy (like faded areas) or the whole thing may come awf & cause scarring. My sis is a tattoo artist & said before the scabbing begins if you rly don't want the tattoo anymore RIGHT when you get it, you can scrub it off with salt water I think O_o; I don't recommend picking the scabs at first but if it's liek a hovering dry scab you could peel it awf gently and it won't affect the tat. Just make shore to keep it moisturized all the time with a non-scented lotion.

after you have a tattoo and it heals, does the skin feel or look any differentYah I notice some areas seems thicker on onna my tats and then normal on others. It depends if the tattooist dug the needle in too deep and it can cause scarring, aka thicker skin areas. But mostly it feels like the ( ... )

Ahhh... thank you for being a fountain of knowledge! :D A-okay then. No picking at it :)

I edited my original entry and put this in, but : What should I look for when I'm looking for a decent tattoo shop/artist? Is there a reliable way to gage someone's style/skill/experience? Or some kind of industry standard?

I *AM* seriously considering getting a Michaelangelo Tattoo... I'm just not sure what right now... but I have an idea in my head. I just need to get it down on paper. Also, my g/f, soliloquy is wanting to FINALLY get a ninja turtle tattoo. She's just not sure who (but I think hers will prolly be a Leo)

Yeah, mine will be a Leo! :-D

I've wanted a Ninja Turtle tattoo since I was a teenager, but I've been putting it off ... now that I have a significant other who is cool about tattoos and wants one herself (bonus!) it's the right time to go forward with it.

Mine didn't scab and the skin doesn't feel too much different... so yeah... just follow the instructions your tattoo artist gives you for after care (don't go swimming in swimming pools/ocean, don't get direct sunlight on it for awhile, continue to rub aquaphor or some sort of healing ointment on it).

Have no idea about the artist though. I kinda went around until I found a place where the vibe was good.

As far as scabbing, it depends how big you get the tattoo. The one on my ankle is of an ouroborous (a snake eating its own tail) so it's pretty narrow. That one didn't scab at all. The one on my wrist scabbed for a couple of days. The one I just got on my bicep was scabby for a week. If you pick at it, it may not heal as cleanly as it would have, and the colours can be distorted. I put sunscreen on my tattoos if I'm going to be out in the sun for a while to keep them looking bright ( ... )

Yes, it scabs up. It doesn't look all grody like a scab over a cut or a scrape would, though. You put on this lotion for the first few days (I can't remember the brand name I used or what's special about it, lol, but the tattooist tells you what to use) and after that you just put regular plain skin lotion on it to keep the skin moisturized. I am a tremendous dork so I actually kind of enjoyed taking care of it- it felt like taking care of a new little pet. *G ( ... )
