Were Ocelot and the original EVA boyfriends?

In MGS3, some of you may remember these details mentioned about ADAM (Ocelot) and EVA (the male one): They were NSA cryptologists who staged a defection to the Soviet Union together in 1960.

While browsing Wikipedia today, I found this article about two men named Martin and Mitchell, NSA cryptologists who defected to the Soviet Union together in ( Read more... )

Given Kojima's penchant for referencing (and playing with) IRL history in this series, I don't know why it didn't occur to me to look them up. Thanks for this! /reads article

Personally, I'm all over the possibility that they were lovers, but it bears keeping in mind that these allegations were made by an inherently biased body concerned with "Un-American Activities", so it also wouldn't be surprising if there'd been a smear-campaign on them fuelled by charges of something that was still a social taboo at the time. (The media frenzy around it sounds pretty much like the unfortunately standard "ZOMG evil gay agenda!!1" fare.) Although, hey, as far as I can tell without more info any scenario ranging from the two of them being lovers, or gay/bi but dating someone else (or no one), or only one of them being non-heterosexual, or maybe just having gay contacts could be equally plausible. It's intriguing historical fic material, come to think of it.

I agree that historically/IRL the gay accusations were probably just the typical reds-under-the-bed mentality. Pretty much anybody accused of being a communist also got accused of being a homosexual.

I'm pretty sure Kojima probably based the idea on this tidbit though, and Ocelot himself is undeniably gay and "likely sadistic".

I think the whole thing is very interesting and I'd love to see more people play with it....makes me feel bad for Ocelot,a nd wonder if he was friends with the male EVA. It's always interesting to see Ocelot having relationships outside of BIG BOSS BIG BOSS BIG BOSS....especially if they're moderately normal (as normal as relationships get in MGS, anyway).

It's just too bad original-EVA never got screen-time. Female-EVA probably killed him (it felt to me like it was implied that she did), but if she didn't, it would be interesting seeing him pop up in another game and give us details about his relationship with Ocelot. And yeah, I too wish there was more details on Ocelot's relationships outside of the one with Big Boss.

The idea of 16-year-old Ocelot with a boyfriend is terribly cute though. Even if he probably thought original-EVA wasn't amazing enough to really fall in love with like he does with Big Boss... it could have been a casual and/or sexual relationship at least.

How do you know that the Male Eva wasn't shown. Zero specified Adam, and Eva-M probibly had no idea what was going on unless Adam let him know.

My theory is that Eva-M was likely Johnny, someone in Volgan's group, he had ties to America and seemed to want to get back (a good reason for him to agree to this work) and wasn't it so convient that he had the radio frequency to show Snake once he had an excuse....

This is my pet theory too. I've always thought it was Raikov. And I've always felt that there might have been something between Ocelot and Raikov, if only on a base sexual level.

Raikov is complimentary to Ocelot in many ways. We're told that he's sadistic and aggressive without actually seeing it in practise, whereas Ocelot's sadistic side seems to awaken within the game's timeline. He's unashamedly feminine where Ocelot seems to struggle to appear masculine in the face of constant humiliation from BB. Raikov is comfortably in a relationship with a man while Ocelot clearly wishes he was...

But from what in-game EVA said, it always stuck out to me that she more than likely killed the real EVA. I know it's only an implication, but for me, it kinda explained why Ocelot was kinda paranoid, trying to pick out "the spy".

I figured Ocelot was paranoid about getting caught and was just trying to distract attention from himself and on to other people.
