Were Ocelot and the original EVA boyfriends?

In MGS3, some of you may remember these details mentioned about ADAM (Ocelot) and EVA (the male one): They were NSA cryptologists who staged a defection to the Soviet Union together in 1960.

Given Kojima's penchant for referencing (and playing with) IRL history in this series, I don't know why it didn't occur to me to look them up. Thanks for this! /reads article

Personally, I'm all over the possibility that they were lovers, but it bears keeping in mind that these allegations were made by an inherently biased body concerned with "Un-American Activities", so it also wouldn't be surprising if there'd been a smear-campaign on them fuelled by charges of something that was still a social taboo at the time. (The media frenzy around it sounds pretty much like the unfortunately standard "ZOMG evil gay agenda!!1" fare.) Although, hey, as far as I can tell without more info any scenario ranging from the two of them being lovers, or gay/bi but dating someone else (or no one), or only one of them being non-heterosexual, or maybe just having gay contacts could be equally plausible. It's intriguing historical fic material, come to think of it.

It said that "the United States Government is as unscrupulous as it has accused the Soviet Government of being." and They also complained of restrictions on freedom in the U.S., such as government confiscation of mail, particularly the freedom of those who are "not theists" or "whose political convictions are unpopular."
Some freaking badass statements to be making in 1960. Or, actually, not only then.

Anyway, someone in this comm seems to have thought about Ocelot's NSA background before, as evidenced by this tag if you haven't seen it already. :D
