I promise that there's a serious conversation behind that title. Namely: I'm pretty sure Otacon has Asperger's Syndrome ( Read more... )

Meh.

Thing with Asperger's is...why can't people just be awkward? Why must it be some huge deal? Let Hal just be a geek that likes his computers and anime. Besides, it's not as if he's really in a position to go out and make friends. Not a good idea to start up a MySpace when you're pretty much on every major government's hit list.

I'm not saying he can't just be awkward, I'm just presenting the possibility.

I agree with kiskalla, sometimes awkwardness is just awkwardness, and in Hal's case I think some of his issues stem from what happened with his step-mom and that his job doesn't allow him much of a social life.

As someone who actually has been diagnosed Aspergers, I have to agree with Kisk and Iczer. Perhaps the most prominent indicator of Aspergers is an unwillingness or inability to make eye contact. To use myself as an example, I won't even look at people's faces, most of the time. I'll look almost anywhere else, but I have to force myself to look someone in the eye. Hal seems to be free of this problem. If you watch, he repeatedly makes eyecontact several times throughout the series. When he looks away, it's because he's got to focus on something else.

In addition, he just seems more awkward than actually unwilling to interact. He talks freely with Snake once he's done being scared to death of him, apparently spoke readily with Wolf, and had no problems speaking with Raiden. It's far more likely that he's just awkward because he was withdrawn for many years and worked in isolation -- because even when you do government work, there's not a lot of people to talk o in Alaska.

I'm not going to pay for a doctor diagnosis; that's the only reason it's not official for me. And I have to disagree with what you said ( ... )

Off topic: You're working on growing out of being smart? *confused* Surely not...?

Other than that, which is confusing the heck out of me, I agree. No reason not to write fic about it, whether it fits perfectly in canon or not.

I agree with firefly. If you want to do it, do it. Plausibility doesn't stop other people, and you HAVE plausibility. I once dated a guy with Asperger's. He was a lot like Otacon, too. I actually had this discussion with seien before.

But he could learn to trust people and even latch to them at a moment's notice. But he was very particular about people touching him, and he very very rarely made eye contact. But he was such a good guy. So. Go for it.

You've been on ff.net. There are far stupider things, m'dear.
